Friends, fun & frivolity…
It takes at least two days into the vacation to unwind and de-stress. This time almost three. But sitting by sand, and admiring the serene aqua blue waters of Miami Beach, let’s just say that one can be swooned back into a state of simplicity.
During our time off, Mayra and I did [...]

urban connections & conga subway rides

23 May 2005

Met with Rudy today in midtown manhattan. It’s amazing how blogs can bring bruthas together from opposite coasts down to a simple subway ride away. Rudy’s a leader, visionary, and overall “cool people”.
On the subway ride back to the office, two young brothers plopped their chairs and congas next to me, and began to slap [...]

Latino Leadership Circle has a blog

21 May 2005

I’m part of a group here in the Big Apple called the Latino Leadership Circle, a group of progressive ministers. We’ve finally decided to start a blog. Our purpose is for theological reflection, article writing, promotion of dialogical forums, and the discussion of social justice in our community.
Check out Dave Ramos’ first post.

The Force was with it…

19 May 2005

Caught Star Wars Episode III. I was going watch it by myself, but I called up my friend Gabriel as I drove by the movie theatre to check out the time. “Brother-man” happened to be 1 block away from the theatre and Lo behold he is a Star Wars fan as well. It was cool [...]

A Project Girl’s Plight

17 May 2005

I have spent much of my life unapologetic about where I come from. I grew up in one of the largest projects in the United States: Queens Bridge Houses. Queensbridge Houses is the largest single development in all of New York City with 3,101 apartments. It is also the City’s largest public housing development. It [...]

Quote by Drucker

16 May 2005

Peter Drucker: “Every few hundred years in Western history there occurs a sharp transformation…. Within a few short decades, society rearranges itself–it’s worldview; its basic values: its social and political structures; its arts; its key institutions. Fifty years later, there is a new world. And the people born then cannot even imagine the world in [...]

NYC Latino Leadership Conversation

14 May 2005

Dr. Marc Rivera convened a meeting yesterday at the American Bible Society called “Latino Leadership Excellence- Challenges Facing the Urban Latino Church”. As I believe only Pastor Marc (PM) could, he convened close to 90 leaders from both the younger and older generation. Present were an eclectic mix of clergy, marketplace leaders, laity, representing different [...]

Our Theology informed by the other Americas?

12 May 2005

Interesting article at Religion & Ethics News Weekly…
Here’s an excerpt:

Many scholars say that the kind of changes happening here in Guatemala’s religious landscape — especially the rise of Evangelical faiths — are part of a global transformation of Christianity — a transformation that promises to change the complexion and character of the Christian faith in [...]

2 Wisdoms & Partnership Allergies

10 May 2005

The biblical book of James has been a “butt-kicking” experience for me. I realize more and more as my friend in Seattle says, that “brother James was a no-nonsense tell-it-like-it-be kinda of brutha.” With that said I looked at the chapter where he writes about 2 kinds of wisdom (chapter 3:13-17). The first wisdom is [...]

Faith, Advocacy & Activism

06 May 2005

Every now and then, there’s a time when your energy and “umph” are irrelevant to the success of a matter. And while I’ve become a somewhat competent logistician-in the great scheme of things-it really isn’t always about what I do or don’t do. It’s more like God’s subtle workings undergirding this great edifice called [...]

Political-Theological Reflection

03 May 2005

Had a conversation with J.C., a friend from a cohort I belong to called Latino Leadership Circle. As we reflected and solved the problems of the world-in 45 minutes or less, there were some interesting strands and questions we highlighted…
1. “The American Dream Exported?”
Most Latinos voted Republican last year. Not sure why. I don’t judge [...]

“I’m not red, and I’m not blue…I’m brown”

03 May 2005

Yep, that’s what Luis Cortes, President of Nueva Esperanza, Inc. told the NY Times, in today’s article: Hispanic Group Thrives on Faith and Federal Aid

Quote by Archbishop Oscar Romero

02 May 2005

“When the church hears the cry of the oppressed it cannot but denounce the social structures that give rise to and perpetuate the misery from which the cry arises.”
